Here are some FAQs that might help you:
The only time you can see the background color changing is when the background is visible. When you choose or take a photo the app fills the space with the photo, so no background is peeking through. If you move the photo around at that point you will start to see the background. You may also see it when you rotate or scale down.
Not much. It just fills your photo into a quadrant tile, and then flips it to create mirror images. Once you have that you can create a perfect repeating tile pattern from anything. The real fun happens when you start scaling, rotating, and moving the image.
Did you just answer your own question? There are so many amazing free apps that let you go nuts tweaking your photo. We'll let the big boys (Instagram, Snapseed, VSCOCam, etc) handle that. We gave you some basic tools to help you while you're tweaking your pattern. Once you're good with the pattern just save it and import it into your favorite photo editing app and do what you do. If you want to see more tools added, drop us a note on Twitter with your feature request and we'll see what we can do.
Unless this thing gets crazy popular, not likely. Sorry.
